  This course module presents a hands-on methodology employing Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 with components (COM and ActiveX) to be used in Web applications. The module explores how to access databases utilizing an object-oriented approach. The students will learn the concepts of object oriented technology and how to apply it in Web development environment. This course will teach you how to use Active Server Pages (ASP) and Visual Basic 6.0 to provide advanced business logic processing for the Web site.

  Prerequisite: Visual Basic programming.


Lesson 1
  • Visual Basic Fundamentals
  • Brief review of the skills needed to create a simple VB application
LAB 1. Objective: Get the practical skills in creating form with multiple control.
  • Create a Form with multiple Control, and put them in use with each other
Lesson 2
  • Data Access Control
  • Using visual data access tools for creating applications that connect to a database
LAB 2. Objective: Get the practical skills in writing the program with error trapping routine using ADO control.
  • Setup A DSN
  • Write a program that connect to a database and navigate via VCR buttons using ADO control
  • Enhance the above program with error trapping routine
Lessons 3 & 4
  • Using ActiveX Data Objects
  • Writing the code with Active X data objects for connecting to a data source
  • Query and data manipulation
LAB 3 & 4. Objective: Get the practical skills in writing the ActiveX program with error trapping routine using ADO object.
  • Setup A DSN
  • Write a program that connect to a database and navigate via VCR buttons using ADO control
  • Enhance the above program with error trapping routine
Lessons 5 & 6
  • Function and Procedures
LAB 5 & 6. Objective: Get the practical skills in writing the application where the students must organize and group the code into functions and procedures for reusability and introduce the student to the concepts of libraries.
  • Write a small application that uses user defined functions and procedures
Lessons 7 & 8. Using Class Modules

LAB 7 & 8. Objective: Get the practical skills in writing the application where the students must use class modules in Visual Basic to create COM components.
  • Create a class module and test using a Visual Basic code
Lessons 9 & 10
  • Using COM Components
LAB 9 & 10. Objective: Get the practical skills in writing the application where the students must use external COM components to extend the functionality of the application that support COM i.e. Visual Basic or VBscript.
  • Create DLL
  • Write a Visual Basic and VBscript program that uses this DLL
Lessons 11 - 14
  • Building Components
LAB 11-14. Objective: Get the practical skills in Building Internet Application using Components
  • Create several TYPEliB COM that can be shared by many applications
