Linux Server. Module 204B.

I. Installing Linux Using Server System
This hands-on module provides you with a thorough understanding of the Linux 9.0 installation process using the Server Installation Class. You will learn how to prepare for installation by reviewing the hardware and network requirements for your location. Then you will complete an installation and learn to check your results.

II. Configuring the Linux Environment
There are a variety of shells to choose from in Linux, including Bash, Bourne, Korn, and C. This course compares their features, and teaches you to work with environmental variables in hidden files and configuration files. Finally, you will learn to create and run shell scripts.

III. Using Aliases and Functions
In this lesson you will learn how to enhance your productivity and personalize your Linux environment by using aliases and functions to assign alternate names to commands or combinations of commands that are difficult or time consuming to enter. You'll practice creating and disable aliases and functions, as well as how to make them a permanent with the use of the ENV variable.

IV. Creating and Managing Users and Groups
In this lesson, you will become proficient creating new users and groups of users. You will learn the methods of managing their access to resources, including the use of passwords and shadow passwords, and limiting the disk space available for user or group usage.

V. Multitasking
One of the primary reasons Linux enjoys such popularity and longevity is its multitasking capabilities. This hands-on course teaches you the techniques to effectively take advantage of running more than one process or program at a time. You will learn a variety of methods for managing your processes, even after you have left the system.

VI. Advanced File Management
Successfully managing your files is an important part of your workflow. This course examines advanced file management techniques, including taking full advantage of the egrep, locate, and whereis commands. You'll also learn the characteristics of the default filesystems mounted via the /etc/fstab file and how to troubleshoot damaged filesystems.

VII. Programming
This lesson explores the abilities of the three data-manipulation commands awk, tr, and sed. You will become familiar with the programming capabilities of awk, the character replacement features of tr, and the filtering abilities of the sed command. Through hands-on exercises, you will gain confidence using and combining all three commands to create program scripts.

VIII. Archiving Files
An important part of managing your system resources is backing up or archiving old files, and limiting the amount of disk space your files consume. You will become familiar with the various methods of transferring data to and restoring from remote media, including using the tar and cpio commands. You'll also explore the use of the compress and gzip commands to reduce the size of specified files

IX. Adding and Removing Packages with RPM
This lesson introduces you to the Red Hat Package Manager (RPM) system. Extensive hands-on lessons familiarize you with using RPM to query, remove, install, and update RPM packages. You'll also learn about Source RPM (SRPM) and how to create your own binary RPM and SRPM packages.

X. Accessing Resources on Other Linux Systems
This lesson teaches you to access resources on other Linux servers, including referring to your system and others on your network using their Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDN). You'll also learn how to send print jobs to printers attached to remote systems.

XI. Implementing Mail Services
In today's fast paced environment, email has become one of the main reasons for implementing a network solution. In this course, you will become versant in email services terminology and develop an understanding of email services as a whole, including the use of several popular email clients. You will learn to configure sendmail to use multiple hostnames and to configure email aliases. Finally, you will implement POP and IMAP email services during hands-on instruction.
